Brand Identity Design for a Scuba Diving Company

Building a Brand for a Global Diving Community

The client.

Diving into the depths of the ocean is more than a sport—it’s an experience of discovery, adventure, and connection with the natural world. For Dave Kahn, founder of Collective Waters, scuba diving is a way of life. What began as a small business selling unique apparel to local divers in Massachusetts has transformed into a mission-driven brand inspiring a global community of ocean explorers and advocates.

Collective Waters is a scuba diving brand created to bring together a global community of divers through shared exploration and ocean experiences.

The challenge.

Collective Waters was launching a new brand focused on building a strong and recognizable identity within the global diving community.

The brand needed to communicate the excitement of underwater exploration while also expressing trust, professionalism, and a sense of connection between divers around the world.

Because the diving industry is filled with generic ocean imagery and similar visual styles, the challenge was to create a brand identity that felt distinctive, modern, and memorable while still clearly connected to the world of diving.

The goal.

The goal of the project was to develop a brand identity that would:

  • capture the emotional experience of diving and ocean exploration

  • appeal to both experienced divers and newcomers

  • communicate community, adventure, and discovery

  • work across digital platforms, merchandise, and future brand initiatives.

Brand Strategy.

The visual direction for Collective Waters was inspired by the unique experience of diving itself.

Diving is both adventurous and deeply immersive. Beneath the surface, the environment becomes calm, quiet, and expansive. The identity needed to reflect this balance between exploration and connection.

The brand also needed to support the idea of a global community of divers, emphasizing shared experiences and a passion for the ocean.

Logo Concept.

The logo was designed as a symbol that reflects multiple elements of the diving experience.

The mark combines several visual references:

  • A seashell, representing marine life and the ocean ecosystem

  • A water droplet, symbolizing the underwater world

  • A location pin, referencing exploration and diving destinations around the world.

Together, these elements create a symbol that communicates diving, discovery, and connection.

Visual Identity.

The visual identity draws inspiration from the colors and atmosphere of the ocean.

The palette evokes deep blues and aquatic tones associated with underwater environments, while maintaining a modern and clean visual style.

Typography and layout were designed to feel clear, confident, and adaptable so the brand could function across digital platforms, merchandise, and community initiatives.

Brand Applications.

The identity system was designed to extend across multiple brand touchpoints, including:

  • merchandise and apparel

  • brand graphics and community content.

  • website design

  • stickers

  • business cards

Outcome.

The final brand identity provides Collective Waters with a distinctive visual system that reflects the spirit of exploration, ocean adventure, and connection between divers.

The identity gives the brand a strong visual foundation as it grows its community and expands its presence within the diving world.

The brand identity has been used for merchandise, community initiatives, and digital platforms supporting the growth of the Collective Waters diving community.
